UWA scientists are invited to meet with Dr Melanie Bagg from the Australian Science Media Centre (AusSMC). Melanie will share tips and advice on the best use of social media to communicate your research with the media and the communities you want to reach.

Melanie has a PhD in Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and more than 10 years of experience in science communication, marketing management, business development and education outreach. She helped create and was inaugural editor of e-Science magazine. Melanie also spent over five years working closely with journalists at the SA Advertiser on specialist science print publications and a weekly “Can you believe it?” column. Currently she is a regular on ABC891 live talk back radio as their regular Medical Science Myth Buster. Melanie is extremely passionate about science communication and how science is presented to the public via media and social media.

The workshop is targeted at scientists and early career science researchers looking to improve their online profile and communication strategies, and will include the following:

• Introduction to the Australian Science Media Centre

• Mainstream Media/Social media: Common concerns

• Why bother? How engaging with social media can help your career

• Resources that specifically address scientists using social media

• How social media has embraced traditional media

• Which social media categories and platforms are most useful for researchers, best use, pros and cons, some tips for getting started

• Introduction to AusSMC online training resource: Science Media Savvy (SMS)
