The third field season of the Barrow Island Archaeology Project has now concluded and the international team is now analysing myriad cultural assemblages from cave, rockshelter and open sites. In this presentation Peter Veth presents the chronological framework for the Aboriginal occupation of Barrow Island, outlines new understandings from the archaeological signatures of hunter-gatherers from a maritime desert, and discusses the implications of new data for understanding the antiquity of maritime economies from the north-west. A raft of new dates represent 'firsts' for the the Carnarvon Bioregion, adding to the growing number of studies from the larger north-west of Australia. Peter holds the Professorial ARC Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award and is the inaugural Kimberley Foundation Ian Potter Chair in Rock Art.
